So I'm writing a research paper for my english class and the thesis that I pretty much came up with is that environment and upbringing have as much to do with what a person does later in life than the argument of whether they are a "good" or "bad" person. Basically, the book that I have to connect it to is about a bunch of people in Africa that perpetrated a mass genocide larger than the Holocaust in the Congo and killed all of these natives and took advantage of them. And it's about how they all had twisted upbringings and go crazy once they're there, pretty much. And like.... it isn't a coincidence that they all had terrible childhoods, you know? There's something to that. And the fact that most criminals have some kind of problem from when they were younger that led to what they did currently. And it makes you think: What if a perfectly good person with a good upbringing, who means well and has a great heart, went through the same thing? He would become that criminal! He has no control of which situation he is born into as a baby, or what his parents will be like as he's growing up, or where he lives and what disasters he'll become subject to.

So I went to the bookstore because I need a few secondary sources for my project, and I went to the Philosophy and Psychology sections to try to find books that were pretty relevant to my subject. I ended up buying four books haha. They're all pretty fascinating though, not just for my research project, although they're all related. The first one was from Freud and it's "Civilization and Its Discontents" and basically it's talking about what makes civilization the way that it is today (or how it was when he was writing, at least) and what determines how civilization becomes and all of the things behind it, and I read through a few pages and there was a lot in there about the individual himself and how the civilization around him profoundly affects him and what he does later in life, etc. etc. The second one that I bought was called Empire of Illusion and it's summed up by "Traveling to the rinside of professional wrestling bouts at Madison Square Garden, to Las Vegas to write about the pornographic film industry, and to academic conferences held by positive psychologists --who claim to be able to engineer happiness -- Hedges chronicles out terrifying flight as a culture into a state of illusion. He exposes the mechanisms used to divert us from confronting the economic, environmental, political, and moral collapse around us. A culture that cannot distinguish between reality and illusion dies, Hedges argues, and we are dying now." Ooooh scary right well at least it's interesting and that connects because it's basically about how people put up illusions so they don't have to see what's really going on in the real world around them and Leopold in the book did just that as did all of the other people, yes for relevance! The third book was hmm..... "Matter and Consciousness" and it's a book that's basically like ALL psychology mumbo jumbo and somewhat technical terms but it's for beginners so it's not like I won't understand it, you know? And it's all fascinating stuff and just exploring how the mind works and what affects it and how it relays its thoughts into actions etc etc. Not DIRECTLY relevant but it'll be good shit to know and I can impress him with my depth and breadth of the subject when I put that in there. The Final book is "Identity: Youth and Crisis" and it's a few really long short stories and one of them was very interesting to me and it's basically about psychology once again and how when people are young these things affect them etc. etc.

THAT'S AWESOME. And you have an essay on that? Ugh so cool. Except my research paper is pretty much impossible and everybody is failing it and I have put in SO MANY FUCKING HOURS of shit to do for it and it's obnoxious.

And I have no idea how I'm going to do it because I believe that humanity is complete garbage and that of course evil is innate but there are different degrees of evil
There's evil as in you know mass murderers and kiddy fiddlers and trolls and so on
But then there's the intrinsic and underlying "evil" in everyone and by that I mean selfishness and greed and et cetera

First of all we've had different parts to turn in on different days. We've had to send in the introduction, conclusion, summary and opposition paragraphs. We've had to show him notes on our 300 page books. We have to document sources and go to the library and get articles from their databases and bring him copies of the quotes that we're using. It's just a whole bunch of SHIT.

Hmm I see what you are saying about the different levels of evil. Maybe you can even address it in both parts or split it. As in: Everybody has feelings of greed etc becaus that is innate within us because it is survival of the fittest, sometimes you need to look out for yourself and mean the best for yourself, it's only natural etc.... but then you can address the mass murder part of it in another way. I would even split THAT: some people are just bad people that love to hurt others and get off on it, but others have been hurt in their pasts and have been driven to do what they do....

He's really making this a college research paper. It's driving me fucking insane.

Anyway I'm going to go out there and try to get some reading done. I'm going to read the illusion one first, about the pornography and faking happiness and dissociating etc. Or at least I'll keep giving it tries haha.

I did exactly the same thing last year though
I did fuck all for the month we had to do the project in and then the night before it was due I stayed up literally all night and wrote two essays and a conclusion and an introduction and a biographical essay and a film review and some other things
