i was checking up other reviews to see if they caught anything i missed… and not a single one mentioned joseph spieldenner. maybe i’m the only one who actually cares because grantaire is my favorite character altogether, but joseph understood the character of grantaire. during abc cafe, he becomes the obscene drunk who’s barely tolerated by the others for his good humor. i loved his “i am agog, i am aghast.” it was really the little things that made me squeal with glee. first off, drink with me. after joseph did his solo of angst, as i tend to call it, and he stares at enjolras. he became the pygmalion pining after his splendid statue that only returned to him disdain. and then end. the final battle. their deaths. that was perfect. joseph’s grantaire seemed so confused but when they faced each other over marius’s body and enjolras left to climb the summit and wave the flag, there was this look of utter panic on his face and he tried to reach enjolras before following his beloved orestes to death. the fact that my favorite character was perfect just made the entire musical for me.
