Danielle Giglevitch 13 March, 2011 English 10E Thirsk Transformation in Les Misérables
Throughout the book Les Misérables, many of the characters go through life-changing processes which are narrated with a barrage of literary techniques. Many themes represent the book, and one of the most continuously present themes is the theme of transformation. A plethora of literary devices bring the theme to the reader’s attention. Victor Hugo uses the theme of transformation throughout the book, especially in the case of the character of Jean Valjean. This theme is masterfully portrayed through the use of several literary techniques: archetypes, imagery, and symbolism. Certain color archetypes are present in the descriptions of Jean Valjean to show how he has transformed throughout the story. At Jean’s introduction, his appearance is described in great detail, and his clothing is relevant to the theme of transformation. His pants are described as “...coarse, blue trousers, worn and shabby, white on one knee, and with holes in the other... (Hugo, 7)" The small patch of white on Jean’s knee represents the small part of him that is still good. After his prison sentence, Jean becomes hardened and cruel, and develops a desire for revenge. Although he is a criminal, he still has the capability of becoming a good and moral person. The color white, which is commonly associated with purity and innocent, plays a significant role in the description of Jean Valjean as time progresses. Years later, Jean’s appearance changes as he himself changes: “His hair was perfectly white... He had named the daughter Mademoiselle Lanoire (Black) and the father Leblanc (White). (Hugo, 269-70)" Although not many years have passed, all of Jean’s hair turns white, despite the fact that he is not very old. From his release from prison to the time Marius’ interest in Jean and Cosette grows, Jean has become a better person; his moral standing has become fully intact. The growth of the color white from a small speck on Jean’s clothing to the changing of his own hair color in its entirety represents the transformation that he has made, from a criminal to a respected member of society. Water, often linked with redemption and purification, is present in two important moments of Jean’s life. The first of which occurs at the time of Jean’s escape from the prison ship, Orion. After Jean rescues a troubled member of the ship’s crew, he falls into the water, “He had disappeared into the sea, without making even a ripple as though he had fallen into a cask of oil. (Hugo, 146)" The sea, as a source of water, specifically in this situation, represents rebirth. Just as he physically falls into the water without making a single ripple, he soundlessly escapes his association with crime and he is reborn. After his descent, he beings to transform into a normal and respected man, and he begins to lead an average life for the first time since his initial arrest. Shortly after his escape from the prison ship, water is seen once again at the beginning of Jean’s largest transformation: his introduction to Cosette. As Cosette walks through the woods in search of water for the Thénardiers, she meets Jean for the first time and her water bucket is taken from her. The scene is narrated as, “At that moment, she felt all at once that the weight of the bucket was gone. A hand, which seemed enormous to her, had just caught the handle, and was carrying it easily. (Hugo, 157)” Jean is physically taking the water from Cosette, just a he also takes a chance to transform himself from her. Cosette provides Jean with an opportunity to become pure, and he takes advantage of that opportunity. Through Cosette’s love, he is finally able to let go of his guilt associated with once having been a criminal and he becomes a better man. While the color white is often present in moments of great importance and chance in Jean’s life, it is not the only symbol that portrays transformation. Bishop Bienvenu initially provides Jean with a chance to change after Jean steals his silver. He tells Jean, “My friend, before you go away, here are your candlesticks; take them. (Hugo, 33)” The candlesticks remain with Jean for the rest of his life as a reminder of the bishop’s goodwill towards him. While the main objective of the candlesticks is to serve as a reminder to Jean, the potential to use the candlesticks for light is relevant to the theme of transformation. Fire represents the ability to transform, as well as regeneration. The candlesticks metaphorically light the path to betterment for Jean. He is compelled to become a better person because of the promise that he was forced to make to the bishop. After he fives Jean the candlesticks, the bishop says. “Forget not, never forget that you have promised me to use this silver to become an honest man. (Hugo, 34)” Jean never forgets his promise as long as he lives, and at the very end of his life, he brings the candlesticks out once more to remind himself that he is indebted to Bienvenu and that he had promised the bishop to make a transformation. The candlesticks are not only symbols of transformation; they also provide imagery that hint to Jean’s change. At the time of his death, Jean lights the two candlesticks, and they shine down on him as he dies: “He had fallen backward, the light from the candlesticks fell upon him; his white face looked up toward heaven, he let Cosette and Marius cover his hands with kisses; he was dead. (Hugo, 594)” The light of the candlesticks reflects down on Jean as his promise to the bishop reflects upon him. He remained vigilant in keeping his promise, and in the end, he did grant the bishop’s wish. In a way, Jean has become similar to the bishop, and the final scene makes a comparison between the two. When Jean steals the bishop’s silver from his room in the beginning of the novel, Jean sees the bishop as he is sleeping, and the moonlight shines down upon Bienvenu’s peaceful face. This is a similar situation to Jean’s death scene, except for the sources of light in each case. In the case of the bishop, the moonlight is shining down on him. It is a natural source of light, just as the bishop is naturally good and pure. In Jean’s case, the light is manmade; he manually lit the candles. Likewise, Jean makes himself into a better person. He struggles and faces hardships along the way, but in the end he is able to finally transform himself into a moral person, just as he promised to bishop so many years ago. As the story progresses, Jean’s transformation from a criminal into an honest man is narrated with the help of archetypes, imagery, and symbolism. As the amount of white that is physically present on him grows, Jean’s purity and goodness grow. Water is present in the most important and life-changing moments of his life that lead to his betterment. Bienvenu’s demand of Jean to become a better man stays with Jean for his entire life, in the mental form of the promise Jean has made and in the physical form of the candlesticks. These objects act as literary devices that describe Jean’s process of transformation throughout the book and drive the overall theme of transformation.
